Is it really free?
Yes. One project with the full script editor, AI breakdowns, index cards, storyboards, shot lists and the planning board, free forever with no credit card. The AI is metered rather than crippled: 25 credits a month, which is real breakdown work, not a demo. Paid plans add scheduling, budgets, call sheets and the on-set tools, and only when you actually need them.
Does it export to Final Draft?
Import from Final Draft (.fdx) and Fountain is free and unlimited, so bringing an existing script in costs nothing. On the way out, the free plan exports Fountain, PDF, plain text and HTML, which means your work is never trapped in here. Exporting back out as .fdx or Word (.docx) is part of Indie, at £10/mo billed annually.
Does it format screenplays properly?
Yes. Industry-standard formatting is applied as you type: scene headings, action, character, parenthetical, dialogue and transitions, with Tab and Enter moving between them the way you expect. Pagination is measured from the real rendered page, so the page count matches what prints.
Can I write with someone else at the same time?
Not on the free plan, which is single-writer. Live co-editing with cursors, comments and revision tracking starts on Indie, at £10/mo billed annually, which includes two collaborators. You can still send anyone a read-only share link from the free plan, so a producer or script editor can read the current draft without an account and without you emailing a file.
What happens when I'm ready to shoot?
Your script is already the production database. AI breakdowns tag cast, props, wardrobe, vehicles and locations scene by scene on the free plan. When you add scheduling on a paid plan, the stripboard and call sheets are built from that same data, so nothing is retyped.
